The Lone Samurai by William Scott Wilson

This book is an astonishing story of how Miyamoto Musashi who lived in the Japan of the early 1600's moved from being a young man of astonishing violence and great accomplishment in violence to becoming one of the great masters and teachers of strategy culminating in the writing of The Book of the Five Rings.

Wilson does an excellent job of presenting a narrative that brings the long-ago and somewhat oblique Musashi to life for the reader. We see the important duels and battles and receive an uncomplicated sense of the development of Musashi's mind.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the ancient samurai.
